 | 10:44 am - Archive of Our Own: Open Beta... Unnecessary full disclosure: I worked for the OTW for 16 months in its start up year...er...sixteen months. Now...with that out of the way...
Hi all! Just a quick note to let you know that the OTW's archive project, i.e., an Archive of Our Own, is going into open beta this Saturday!
As the blog entry tells you, there are going to be two ways to get an account:
(1) get an invite from an existing account holder (I have one invitation at the moment, and I'll give it to the first known-to-me person who asks for it in comments at dreamwidth by leaving an email address. (note: "known-to-me' doesn't mean we're bff's and go on holidays together; it could just mean we've had a few amicable exchanges online.) (mine is taken)
(2) put your name on the account queue (an exact link for this queue will be announced by the OTW tomorrow...for now, what they have are multiple links in the "heads up" post I linked to above for a fixed world clock, showing you what time the queue will start "moving" in your time zone. ETA: The link to the Account Creation Invite Page has appeared here.
Remember this is still in beta...eventually I believe anybody will be able to open an account with no hoops to jump through. But it can be fun to get involved with projects when they're still at an early enough stagea to help shape the way they're eventually going to work.
(eta...if you don't need a cool new archive to house your fanworks right now, or if you're too tired to learn a new upload system until work eases up or the semester ends, or if you have philosophical objections to this or any other archive, for whatever reason, I'd suggest that instead of starting a debate in the comments, you just don't open up an account. Easy-peasy.)

 | 08:54 am I'm with Joseph A. Pollini (see linked article): I think using Facebook as an alibi is utterly idiotic. Just ask any of the thousands of people who hack post in their friends journals every day of the week. I mean, I'm pretty sure the kid didn't commit the robbery he was accused of - pretty positive in fact - but seriously...some people need to be a little more proactive in getting up to speed with the ins and outs of technology.
In other news: many tear-inducing clips of dogs welcoming home soldiers
In other other news...there are only twelve hours left to sign up for Yuletide! (and my letter is here)

 | 04:17 pm Because I'm just too lazy to try to find out on my own...is there anybody who's an expert on the Archive of Our Own who could tell me what the situation is with translations? A number of my stories have been translated into other languages (yay!), and one of the translators wrote to say she's going to be adding the [Czech version of my] stories to the archive, but doesn't know what name to put them under. I mean, clearly, she'll only have access to her own account(s), but she doesn't want it to seem as if she was the original author.
Does anybody know for *certain* what the procedure is?

 | 09:24 am - Yuletide... To all my lovely friends who have yet to participate in Yuletide: the Obscure Fandom Anonymous Fanfic Exchange, there are still four days to go until sign-ups end.
You need to be willing to offer to write a single story (het, slash, or gen, as you choose) from as few as a handful of fandoms from the pool of 3554 nominated fandoms. In exchange, you'll have a story written for you in one of the three or four fandoms you'll request. And you have to be over 18. That's it...no other prerequisites!
The FAQ is here - and the Sign-up Link is here
(Note: if you want to see a list of the available fandoms and how they're currently faring in terms of being requested and offered before you commit, you can click here. The page will take a while to load, so be patient)
This is the seventh year for one of the most amazing fic exchanges in fandom. Come be a part of it!
(eta: unrelated, but...my gmail's been erratic for the past week. I'm going to be offline until late this afternoon, but if you're expecting an email from me or you've sent an email and haven't received a reply, leave a note here and I'll write to you from a different email address later today)

cathouse_mary is posting about a hoarding situation - and about 29 cats that will probably be taken away and euthanized by tomorrow if something isn't done.
So.

 | 10:55 am - Autumn TV Round-Up It's not as if I don't like t.v.
I follow Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures obsessively (and will return to Torchwood, if it ever returns to me). Plus there's the kind of silly True Blood, which I love, despite its many...non-strengths.
I've adopted Leverage and Supernatural and Merlin, all of which I'd rejected initially, but picked up again during their second seasons - and while I'd abandoned House twice, the show and I have reunited (happily, for the moment, at least)
And then there are the semi-unscripted shows (QI, Craig Ferguson), The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition), American Idol. Project Runway), which I don't follow obsessively, but which all make me mostly happy when I watch them (although this season of Project Runway is extremely weak.
But I seem to have ADD when it comes to new series. I can make it through a single episode - usually - but my attention starts to wander by the time the credits roll, and even if the show is promising in one way or another, I'm weirdly unable to watch more than fifteen minutes or so of the second episode. I've already lost interest entirely in Glee, Eastwick, Fast Forward, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Stargate: Universe this season.
It's not as if I'm complaining about not having enough to watch (because honestly...what I watch is already too much), but...do I have a fannish medical condition? *g*
(and no, before you ask it's not just an aversion to commercials, because I reacted the same way to the UK's Desperate Romantics, and needless to say I watched that without ads)

 | 05:17 pm - Attention: all Fans of Snape and McGonagall (either together or...*together*)... I've just inherited Modly responsibilities for close_contrast (the Snape & McGonagall community over on LiveJournal.).
There won't be many changes made to the comm (for the time being, at least), but I am trying to get the Fic and Art Master List updated (both in the sense of fixing broken links and adding new pieces that didn't exist when the list was last updated).
I've started to make some of those changes already, but if you - or someone you know - created Art or wrote Fic (gen, het, or slash) with significant interaction between Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall, please take a look at the Master List of Snape and McGonagall Links and see if the link still works.
If the link is broken (or no link exists), please leave a comment at the bottom of the Master List entry with as many of the following as you can provide: Author/Artist, URL, title, Rating, Summary, and word count (in the case of fic).
If you have any Questions, Comments, or Suggestions about the close_contrast community, feel free to leave them in this post.
And if you like Snape and McGonagall, but you're not a member of the community? Come join!

 | 08:21 am - Yuletide 2009! Nominations for Yuletide Fandoms opened yesterday...click the link to nominate your favorites!
(although...I'm sad that Leverage is, apparently, not eligible even though it just premiered December 2008. I'm being good and not emailing the mods about it, since the rules say to just pick another fandom if your favorites aren't eligible, but inside I'm emailing the mods! *gets all foot stompy*) [ETA The mods have changed their minds about Leverage...it's eligible now!<]
As I do each year, I've nominated the "nobody will write them for me dammit!" non-existent fandoms of Carny (be spoiled for the whole movie in ten minutes with cheesy background music and then look at the other clips) and Here Come the Brides (wikipedia entry here and first season dvd's available here). I've also nominated Novik's Temeraire series, McKinley's Sunshine, and Gaiman's Graveyard Book, plus my old stand-by Galaxy Quest

 | 10:38 pm - Onward to the ALCS! I grew up in Minnesota.
During baseball season in my childhood, I used to fall asleep with my olive green transistor radio hidden inside my pillowcase, listening to Halsey Hall call the Minnesota Twins' games on WCCO radio. These were the days of Harmon Killebrew and Rod Carew and Tony Oliva and Bob Allison and the wonderful old school Metropolitan Stadium - and I loved my team.
I've been a Yankees fan for decades now and I'm thrilled about the series sweep, but I just wanted to give a little shout out (and a lot of respect) to my old team, the Minnesota Twins, for three well played games.
(Note: if the World Series ends up being Yankees vs. Dodgers, I really want Joe Torre's Dodgers to kick the Yankees' ass in the first game, just to drive the Steinbrenner family insane. Then, of course, I'll want the Yankees to win the next four games.)

 | 09:42 am - The Arts? I'm watching last year's [U.K.] season two documentary series "The Choir" (which I love, not least of which because the choir director could easily be David Tennant's brother) and it started me wondering about the presence of the arts in primary and secondary schools.
When I was a child (lo these many years ago), we all had regular music lessons and art lessons and drama lessons and dance lessons through 9th grade at least. In high school, I was in the choir and did theatre (both as extracurricular pursuits and as regular classes). But I know that a lot of schools - in the US and elsewhere - have had major budget cuts over the past decades and the arts seem to always be the first things to go. So...what about you all (especially the younger ones)? Regular arts classes on a daily basis? Or is that just a laughable concept these days?

 | 10:14 pm - NCIS: Los Angeles - 1.01 Series Premiere...
( spoilers, of course )
|
 | 05:28 pm - Not So Random Recs So the snarry_games has finished posting, but I am nowhere near finished reading all the fic. I think I've commented on all the art, but there are a hell of a lot of 30,000+ word stories to read, which...don't get me wrong - I love long stories - but..."long fic is long" as the lolcats say.
However, I thought I might as well offer up a few recs: Seven Snarry and One Snupin (...plus a random True Blood - Erik/Sookie...mostly - that somehow found its way into the mix *g*). Let me just say, though, that some of the stories in this particular group of recs are a lot...darker, I suppose, than the stories I rec generally are. This is not to say that I didn't like some of the sweet or romantic or fun stories in the Games - or even that there aren't sweet or romantic or funny elements in some of the stories I've recced here. It's just that this time around, I seem to be drawn a little more to some things that are outside my usual comfort zone.
( This way to the recs... )
*goes back to reading 96,000 word Snarry*
(Note: the Snarry Games Master List is here and my relatively teeny 8780 word story - "Everything He Ever Wanted" - is here)

Title: Everything He Ever Wanted Author: Beth H / bethbethbeth Team: Cauldron Genre: Alive & Kicking Prompt(s): Diary of a Prince, Tongue Tied Rating: PG (...and even this is just wishful thinking) Warning/Kinks: (Highlight to read possible warnings) Non-graphic Het (Snape/Lily; Harry/Ginny); What looks like an AU in parts; Some totally understandable cursing and angst; A slim chance that the Epilogue will never happen. Word Count: ~8780
Summary: Wouldn't it be wonderful, if at life's end, you were given everything you'd ever wished for? Severus Snape used to think so.

 | 04:04 pm - 38 Recs in 7 Fandoms Seriously...seriously (she said, channeling new favorite character: Leverage's Alec Hardison), if I don't post these recs soon, I'm afraid none of the authors will still be writing in the same fandoms.
38 recs in 7 different fandoms, most of which - but not all - were posted ages ago, before Fest Writer's Block Guilt struck with a vengeance and kept me from reading anything new.
Doctor Who/Torchwood - 1 Harry Potter - 24 Kyou Kara Maou - 1 RPF (American Idol) - 1 Stargate: Atlantis - 2 Star Trek: Reboot!Verse - 6 Supernatural - 3

 | 12:13 pm - Rickman, Snape, Maine... 1. For the Alan Rickman fans: have a link to a wonderful AR performance from 1989 as Jacques Roux in "The Preacher" segment of the BBC's Revolutionary Witness. I'm going to guess that most of you haven't seen this because *I* hadn't, and I thought I'd seen everything Rickman had filmed.
2. For the Severus Snape fans: lots of sign-ups going on for various Snape-centric holiday fests ( Snarry Holidays and Snupin Santa and oodles of other worthy contenders). I'll be following all of them, but the only holiday fest I'll be participating in (apart from yuletide) is snapelyholidays, which is a slash/het/gen Fic and Art exchange, entirely focused on Snape-centric work. Sign-ups are here...come play!
3. In other news, I'm off to the wilds of Maine now (where i may or may not have an internet connection0 - just in time for Hurricane Bill, apparently. *sigh* See you Thursday, assuming I'm not swept out to sea!

 | 11:52 am The thing I hated most in the romance novels I read in junior high and the thing I hate the most in fanfic now is the scenario where one of the main characters in the pairing runs off half-cocked (as it were) because they think their partner/spouse/lover/whatever doesn't want them anymore.
Sometimes it's due to basic paranoia and sometimes it's due to drawing the wrong conclusions and sometimes its due to the evil machinations of a rival, but no matter what the thing was that made them go into hiding, my response is always the same: "Oh for the love of god...just get a damned confirmation from your partner before you act like a complete ninny and add unnecessary melodrama to this otherwise good story OMG!"
And then I make toast.

 | 05:22 am - Community Reminder Recently, I've noticed a bit of an upswing in the number of people expressing confusion about the meanings of fandom-related words and acronyms, and I was reminded that I'd created an LJ community once upon a time to solve that very problem!
The community is called fanspeak_help, and the basic user info says this:
Are you new to fandom (or new to a fandom) and want to participate, but you have no idea what anyone's talking about? Does a word or phrase you thought you understood seem to have taken on a new meaning recently? Are you a wonderful, good-natured fandom veteran who lives to help newbies (...or who just likes the sound of your own keyboard)?
If any of the above are true, this is the place for you.
fanspeak_help is a community where you can ask questions about acronyms, words, and phrases that you've seen used around fandom, but you're not quite sure what they mean. Click here to join the community.
